I recently watched the 2013 documentary, Kumare, by American filmmaker Vikram Gandhi. Essentially, reinvented as Indian guru Kumare, he starts his own, fake religion. He soon collects a following in Arizona and after completely winning their trust, has to reveal himself as Vikram, filmmaker from New Jersey.
This could not have been an easy film to make. Yet somehow Gandhi, with his teaching of “finding the guru within” managed to create a sincere account of what seemed like quite a profound transformation for all involved.
The film and its themes stayed with me for days. Do we really have everything we need to make it through life already inside of us? It vaguely reminded me of a piece of Sufi writing which I had recently come across.
